Council fined for landfill breach

21 July 2011

EPA Victoria has fined Mitchell Shire Council almost $6,000 for breaching their environmental licence after not properly covering waste at the council operated Seymour landfill.

EPA north east regional manager Clare Kiely said the law requires that by the end of each day’s operations all waste must be covered with a layer of soil at least 0.3 metres or using another method of cover approved by EPA.

Mitchell Shire Council was found to not have appropriately covered their waste.

Ms Kiely said breaching this condition of the licence can lead to an increase of odour from the site, potential for litter to be blown offsite; and a potential increase in vermin.

The council has 28 days to pay the fine, seek an internal review or have the matter dealt with in court.
