A Tullamarine company has been fined $50,000 after two men suffered serious injuries to their hands in February 2009.

Willow Ware Australia Pty Ltd pleaded guilty to one charge laid under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The Melbourne Magistrates Court was told two men were installing a switch on a machine which activated and caused crushing injuries to the men’s hands.

The deaths of two men in work-related circumstances and a few “near misses” have prompted WorkSafe to renew calls of the importance of workplace safety.

A 44-year-old farmer died in a tractor incident in Yarrawonga last Tuesday and a 35-year-old man was electrocuted at Spotswood on 14 July, taking Victoria’s work-related death toll for the year to 10.
