Horsham City Council has received a $5,841 fine from EPA Victoria for accepting Category A waste at its Dooen landfill in March this year.The incident occurred after a waste transporter delivered approximately two tonnes of contaminated soil from a transformer fire at the Horsham Powercor Sub-Station.

A company that allowed industrial waste to be dumped on Werribee Open Range Zoo land was recently convicted in the Werribee Magistrates’ Court.The court heard that Enviro Fill Management (Aust) Pty Ltd had been engaged to provide a significant amount of clean fill to the Zoo however EPA investigations of the site found the company was accepting other material.

Construction waste, asbestos, low level contaminated soils and acid sulphate soils were allowed to be dumped at the site, for the profit of the company, the court heard.

EPA placed several environmental management requirements on AquaSure Pty Ltd, the company responsible for delivering the Victorian Desalination Project in Wonthaggi, in late June.

The company was served with a pollution abatement notice following a review of critical management systems and an inspection of the site by EPA officers and an independent expert who noted several ongoing issues that had the potential to impact the environment.

Safe Work Australia Chair, Mr Tom Phillips AM, today announced the release of two research reports on engineered nanomaterials and a nanotechnology risk assessment tool. Safe Work Australia commissioned the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology to undertake a survey for the report titled Engineered Nanomaterials: investigating substitution and modification options to reduce potential hazards. The survey assessed the current substitution and modification practices used in Australian nanotechnology activities.
