A week of temperatures rising into the mid thirties has prompted a warning for people to be aware of the dangers of exposure to high temperatures and the need to be well-hydrated. WorkSafe’s acting Executive Director, Stan Krpan, urged business operators and supervisors to ensure planning was in place for workers exposed to high temperatures, particularly in coming days when fatigue will add to the danger.  
“The first priority of employers and supervisors is to assess what work needs to be done, and how.

An alarming spate of work-related deaths and serious injuries has prompted WorkSafe Victoria to call on businesses and workers to go back-to-basics and take workplace safety more seriously.

Two fatalities this week and an incident which left a man in hospital with serious head injuries have led to WorkSafe’s call.

The two fatalities, at Wandin North in the Yarra Valley on Tuesday and at Bannockburn, near Geelong, yesterday takes to 20 the number of work-related traumatic deaths this year.

WorkSafe is investigating an incident at Warrandyte this afternoon where a man has suffered serious injuries to his head and upper body.

He was among a crew removing pine trees and it’s thought he was re-positioning a mobile wood chipper on a steep road when it rolled and pinned him between it and a truck.

The incident happened in Kruses Rd, Warrandyte North, around 2pm this afternoon.

The injured man was flown to hospital by air ambulance.

A WorkSafe team is investigating today’s explosion at BOC Industrial Gases in Bell Street, Preston. A 45-year-old Greenvale man suffered serious injuries to his face, stomach and hands in the explosion which happened around 12.15pm.

It is understood the man was filling a bank of nine oxygen bottles used in the health care industry when the explosion happened.
The valve and shoulder of an oxygen cylinder were blown off in the blast.

A man remains in a permanent vegetative state nearly three years after a 700 kg crate of glass fell on him as it was moved after being unloaded from a truck at Dandenong. Judge Chettle yesterday convicted and fined Asixa Pty Ltd $250,000 after the company pleaded guilty to two workplace health and safety charges laid as a result of the July 2006 incident. He said although safety improvements were made after the incident, they should have made sooner.
