EPA Victoria is investigating a recent spike in odours in the Brooklyn area that are impacting on the community.EPA has received more than 40 reports from the public about odours in the Brooklyn and Altona North area between July 24 and 28. Strong winds that have crossed Victoria today have resulted in a spate of calls to WorkSafe. There have been no reports of injuries, however two men on a building site escaped injury when a 5kg piece of metal narrowly missed them having fallen from the top of a lightning rod on the 16th floor of a building in South Melbourne. The lightning rod in turn had been hit by a piece of timber blown from the 27th floor of another construction site.

A second Victorian apprentice has been hurt in two days – this time at a training college in the Latrobe Valley. WorkSafe is investigating the incident at Apprenticeships Group Australia (formerly Gippsland Group Training) involving a 19-year-old female first year apprentice late this morning.

A fundamental safety flaw - failing to install temporary bracing - led to the collapse of the steel frame for a Laverton warehouse during strong winds in December 2006. Eighty tonnes of steel framing for the warehouse and associated offices collapsed leaving the site in Cyanamid St, Laverton. Engineering firm Dimon Consultants Pty Ltd, developer BMF Pty Ltd and construction company S.E.S. Structural Erectors International Pty Ltd were today fined $28,000, $35,000 and $35,000 respectively by Magistrate Sarah Dawes. Each company was ordered to pay costs of $7834.71. They all pleaded guilty to workplace health and safety charges.
